When your building sits back from the road, the sign at the end of the drive is doing all the work. It has to be readable, it has to be handsome, and it has to still be standing after mud season.
What it is
Post and panel is the workhorse of rural and suburban signage, and it is where corners get cut most often. A panel is only as good as what holds it up: posts set below the frost line, backfilled and braced properly, will still be plumb in fifteen years. Posts set shallow will lean by the second spring.
We build the panel and the structure as one thing. That might be a two-sided MDO panel between pressure-treated posts for a campground, a shaped PVC panel with gold accents for a real-estate office, or an eight-foot mahogany panel on turned posts for a church. The engineering underneath is the same discipline in every case.
Double-sided is the default here, because traffic comes from both directions and a blank back reads as an afterthought. Where the site allows, we add a lower changeable-copy area so you can post hours, specials or seasonal messages without calling us back.
Materials & construction
How we build it
Pressure-treated timber, cedar, powder-coated aluminium or ornamental steel, with decorative caps and trim where the setting calls for it.
Footings dug past the frost line and backfilled to spec. This is the single detail that decides whether a sign is still level in ten years.
An optional lower panel for hours, specials or seasonal messages that you can update yourself.
We confirm where the sign can legally sit, check the sight triangle, and mark utilities before digging.
Panel shape, post style and copy hierarchy are drawn to scale and reviewed against how it reads from a moving car.
Panels are cut, sealed on all six edges, and finished. Posts are cut, trimmed and pre-drilled in the shop.
Footings dug, posts set and braced, panel hung and levelled. Site left tidy.

In this part of Massachusetts we set footings below the frost line — generally four feet — and backfill with compacted material or concrete depending on the soil and the sign’s wind load. Anything shallower will heave and lean within a couple of winters.
Almost always, and we recommend it. Traffic approaches from both directions and a blank back is a wasted face. The cost difference is the second panel skin, not a second sign.
Yes. We arrange the Dig Safe markout before any excavation. It is required in Massachusetts and it is not something to work around.
We work to an existing standard regularly — matching post profile, panel proportion, typeface and colour so a new sign reads as part of the family rather than a replacement. Send us a photo of an existing one and we will match it.
If we build in a changeable-copy area, yes — either a track system for individual letters or a removable lower panel we can reprint cheaply. It is worth specifying up front; retrofitting one is more work than building it in.
