Directories & Message Boards

Directories & message boards

Two different problems, one discipline: helping a stranger find the right door, and letting you change what the sign says without calling a sign shop.

What it is

A directory has to survive change. Tenants move, suites get subdivided, and a directory that requires a whole new panel every time someone leaves is a bad design. We build slot-in, track-based and individually replaceable systems so updating a line costs a strip, not a sign.

We have built full directories for the Jones Building, the John Olver Transit Center, Greenfield Corporate Center, 33 Riddell Street Medical Building and 20 Gatehouse Road — buildings where finding the right suite on the first attempt is most of the job. Hierarchy matters more than decoration here: building name, floor, suite, tenant, in that order, at sizes that hold up under indifferent lobby lighting.

Changeable-letter message boards are the other half of this category — the reader boards outside churches, schools, gyms and community centres. Track systems with individual letters you set yourself, weather-tight cases with locking doors, and legible typefaces that still read from a car.

Materials & construction

How we build it

Slot-in directories

Individually replaceable name strips so a tenant change costs one strip rather than a whole panel.

Wayfinding sets

Coordinated floor, suite and directional signage using one consistent type and colour system.

Changeable letter boards

Track systems with individual letters, weather-tight cases and locking polycarbonate doors.

Interior & exterior

Lobby-appropriate finishes inside, fully weather-rated construction outside.

Step 01Map the building

We walk the routes a first-time visitor takes and find where they would actually get lost.

Step 02Set the hierarchy

Type sizes and grouping decided so the panel is scannable rather than merely complete.

Step 03Build for change

Fabricated so updates are a strip or a letter — never a replacement panel.

Step 04Install & hand over

Mounted, and you get the spare letters, spare strips and the file to order more.

Common questions

Directories FAQs

On our slot-in systems you send us the new name and we produce a replacement strip — usually a small, quick job. If you would rather do it in-house we can supply blank strips and the specification so your own printer can produce them.

Room and suite identification signage in public buildings has specific requirements for raised characters, Braille, contrast and mounting height. We build to those requirements when the project calls for it — tell us the building type and we will specify accordingly.

Yes, when built for it: a weather-sealed aluminium case, a locking polycarbonate door with a gasket, and a track system that will not warp. The failure point on cheap reader boards is always the door seal.

More than you think you need. Most people underestimate and then cannot fit the message. We size the board around the longest realistic message you would want to post, not the average one.
